Born on January 8, 1929 in Øster Vrå, Denmark, Kjærholm studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, before rising to prominence during the 1950s. Born in Østervrå, Denmark, Kjærholm began as a cabinetmaker's apprentice with Gronbech in 1948, going on to the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen in 1952. In 1953, he married Hanne Kjærholm who became a successful architect.
